MASON Rider Roundup 2022 | Josh Ibbett
Josh has been there since the start of MASON and has been key in helping to develop and inspire new models. His inspiration is inseparable from our success.
Josh will tell you that racing isn’t everything and he is just as happy touring, and 2022 was no different as he had another incredible year of riding. Take it away Josh…
What were your race, ride, and bikepacking adventure highs and lows of 2022?
The biggest low of the year was training really hard for the Tour Divide, only to get ill after the flight. I semi-recovered before the start but a week in it caught up with me and I had to scratch. The high was the Atlas Mountain Race in October. It was a brilliant journey, a beautiful route, and a solid if not spectacular result to round out the year.
What was the most unexpected event to happen to you/came across along the way?
During the Atlas Mountain Race, I was running really low on water with no hope of resupply for another 12 hours. I slept for 3 hours on a very remote plateau and shortly after I started riding again I came across a 4x4 driving up the track in the opposite direction. They took pity on me and gave me some water, but I still have no idea why they were driving there at 3 am!
What was the most valuable thing that you learned?
Standing in large airport crowds in a pandemic gives you covid!
Do you have a big goal for 2023?
In 2023 I’ll be aiming for the Highland Trail 550 and the Silk Road Mountain race… and I’m sure there will be plenty of other trips along the way.
Were there any rides/races that you planned to do but couldn’t?
I’d love to ride the Migration Gravel Race in Kenya and the Evolution Gravel Race in Tanzania, but so far they have always clashed with other things.
Which MASON bikes do you have? Which one were you using on your favourite ride of 2022?
I’m lucky enough to have been riding for MASON for 8 years, so over that time I have ended up with or ridden pretty much every model at some point. But the Definition and Bokeh are my day-to-day workhorses for road and Gravel… and if I’m riding my ISO then it means a big adventure is imminent
Do you have any MASON bikes on the wishlist?
Not one that exists yet… but I’m working with Dom on something new for those big off-road mountain raids!
