Angus Young rides his Macro to a new Dales record
Angus Young dominates the Dales Divide once again, and shows off the versatility of the configurable MASON Macro.
MASON-supported ultra racer Angus Young has dominated 2025’s Dales Divide – to score an impressive victory and beat his own ‘Fastest Known Time’ for a gruelling 600km course around the rugged beauty of England’s Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Angus’s steed for this feat was his lightweight MASON Macro. As one of the athletes who inspired this very special bicycle, Angus had previously ridden his prototype Macro on challenges like the Silk Road Mountain Race and the Arizona Trail. Dom Mason designed the Macro to be super-configurable, enabling ultra-racers to find the ideal set-up for each event. Until now, that has meant a mountain-bike-style flat bar for Angus’s Macro adventures.
It's been a couple of years since I received the first Macro prototype and during that time I have ridden about 10,000km on it including the Silk Road Mountain Race and the AZT800. For almost all of those miles my Macro has been in its flat bar configuration, like a regular mountain bike. I was keen to fit some drop bars and test whether Dom truly had designed a frame that was suitable for both setups.
One lightweight bike, many race-ready options
This time, Angus decided to really test the Macro’s adaptability, opting for a suspension fork paired with a drop handlebar: the high-speed Macro set-up he felt best suited the conditions of the Dales Divide, and the pace he’d need to maintain in order to beat his own record.
The first half of the race was into a fairly strong headwind so I was very grateful of the aero advantage that the drop bar brought. The off-road sections were mostly on chunky doubletrack, where I found that being on the drops to be a powerful position with plenty of control. I hit the half-way point at Scarborough just about on record pace but now I had the tailwind.
The results? Well, a new Dales Divide course record of 34 hours and 22 minutes is a huge testament to Angus’s aggressive riding style and his determination to power through tough challenges. Fellow racers Dicky Hibbert and Alexander Barry gave Angus stiff competition, but he powered ahead to a convincing victory. This short film from fellow racer Josh Reid gives a lovely flavour of the Dales Divide and features our Josh in action and in conversation.

Angus Young’s drop-bar Macro – optimised for speed across rough Yorkshire terrain – was an important part of his victory and we’re so proud to have supported him in this brilliant achievement. Well done Angus, and thanks for being part of the team that created and tested the race-winning MASON Macro. We know you have other races and FKT attempts coming up, and we're with you all the way.
