Further Race had unique requirements for the racers' bikes. A multi-terrain, multi-surface, short-ultra and difficult-to-research experiment.

Attempts at simplifiying bicycle set-up to 'must-haves' would only result in further questions:

'I'll need Venture tyres; But 650B or 700C?'

'I'm going to take the most direct routes; so do I need aero bars?'

Hanging around the pop-up Mason Workshop at the Further Rally we saw a huge variety of bikes and as many different race set-ups. Here are the Masons that raced Further.

Angus Young | Bokeh XTRDi2

Podium finishes at GBDuro and Further have been highlights of Mason team-member Angus's 2019. His bike spec has been pretty consistent for both events with slight variations to his tyres and gearing.

Philippa Battye | Bokeh Rival 1X

MASONite Philippa crushes ultra-distance riding on all terrains, but has found a particular affinity mixed-terrain and the more adventurous races. This year she was 6th overall / 1st woman at GBDuro as well as directing the race and finished Further in 6th place too. She tends to ride her Bokeh which has carried her safely through some serious adventures.

Josh Ibbett | InSearchOf Force 1X

Josh has been with MASON since the start, having won many ultra-races and bikepacking adventures across the world on a range of Masons. Most of his riding this year has been on his InSearchOf Force1X. A significant event for him this year was TourDivide, where he finished 6th overall despite some huge setbacks.

Camille McMillan | InSearchOf Rival 1X

The curator behind FURTHER, Camille McMillan, uses his InSearchOf to path-find the routes for Further Race. Its total capability to cover all ground found in mountainous regions such as Pyrenees make it ideal for prioneering adventures and all-seasons transport alike. For this year's Race, this InSearchof was ridden by a film crew to scout locations and cover ground in between them quickly.
