Angus Young | Eastern Divide Trail: the challenge begins
Angus Young, like all MASON-supported riders, is no stranger to major adventure. Big races. Epic rides. Enormous challenges most of us can barely imagine.
But Angus has just begun what could be his most formidable undertaking yet.
The Eastern Divide Trail is the world's longest established bikepacking trail. It runs 5,950 miles (9,574km), from Cape Spear, Newfoundland to Key West, Florida.
When Angus came to the Barn to collect the MASON Macro he's using for the EDT, he filled us in on the details of his huge mission: to establish a new 'fastest known time' – a record that currently stands at 41 days, 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Having aleady bagged the FKT for the 4,800 mile (7,800km) European Divide Trail in 2022, Angus explained to us how the Eastern Divide was the perfect candidate for his next great challenge.
From the islands of Canada's Atlantic coast to the subtropical warmth of Florida, this astonishing route will take him through an ever-changing landscape that includes the entire length of the Appalachian mountain range.
Be in no doubt: Angus has taken on the big one here
Angus and the MASON Macro are already well-acquainted. Along with Josh Ibbett, Josh was one of the original test-riders for the Macro, riding his prototype on tough routes like the Arizona Trail.
Angus has embraced the configurability of the Macro, even switching to drop bars for this year's Dales Divide. His record-beating fastest known time speaks for itself.
For the EDT, Angus has kept the drop-bar set-up, but we built him up a new production Macro frame to replace his unpainted prototype – wth HUNT wheels, a suite of SRAM components and, of course, aero bars. Angus acquired a distinctive Lauf carbon-spring fork that we incorporated intro his EDT build: a strategic choice made with maintenance-free longevity in mind, given the 40-day task ahead.
To carry his gear, Angus is using bags from Restrap: a front bag, rear bag, full frame bag and top tube bag.
The challenge began on 31 July 2025, when Angus left Cape Spear: often considered the easternmost point of North America. For three days, he made good progress along the off-road trails of Newfoundland, building a lead over the virtual progress of Logan Kasper's 2024 record-holding ride.
Even less than a week in, Angus has encountered drama. At one point on day 3, there was doubt about whether or not he would make it to Port-aux-Basques in time for his ferry to Nova Scotia. But with characteristic determination, Angus dug in, sped up, and made it to his ferry in time for the planned nighttime sailing and the 7 hours' rest it afforded him.
Back on the trail, and now on the mainland, Angus is pressing on with promising pace. Sleeping by the trailside, dining in gas stations, he's making solid progress through his third Canadian province as he approaches the USA border.
Angus is in this for the long-haul – and so are we, watching his progress with pride and excitement. You can follow Angus via Trackleaders, where his moving 'dot' can be seen competing with Logan Kasper's virtual progress from 2024. And look out for Angus's Instagram updates from the trail.
Go for it, Angus.
