RAW Frame Kit
“The RAW is a bike I’ve been looking forward to for a long time. It fills the MTB sized gap in the Mason range and it doesn’t disappoint. It flies down the hills when fully loaded and I found myself sending it off drops in the trail even with my bike packing gear attached. It's beautifully balanced and far more capable off-road then my skills allow! The ride is super smooth and was really comfortable over the savage terrain of the HT550.”
- Josh Ibbett
Our #RideDrivenDesign development process is crucial to what we do at MASON, and this was never more true than with the RAW. These words from our supported rider Josh Ibbett were his reflection on a RAW prototype after putting it through its paces on the HT550 in May 2021. This event represented a key stage in the formation of the finished RAW product, and in assuring us the bike could perform at the highest level.
Along with supported riders, the team at MASON worked closely with our highly experienced frame builders and Italian & UK tube and component suppliers. This includes our fabrication and finish partners Five Land Bikes, who are renowned in the UK frame building industry and we’re proud to say they are responsible for truly astonishing quality of work, including their role in every RAW frame.

This page gives you some guidelines based on rider height, but these are only a starting point for a proper bike fitting. There are of course many other factors to consider when choosing the right size for you and sizing advice will vary depending on your choice of model from the Mason range and the way that you intend to ride it. We're always here to help of course and would always recommend a professional bike fitting and visiting us for a ride on the Mason Cycles riverside gravel/country lanes test-loop if you can. There is further advice, based on specific models, below the height chart.
Fitting a bike to a rider is an important process, this information is a start to the process but it’s not really possible to give 100% accurate fitting instructions online.
Humans are odd shapes, each person’s physical dimensions: arm, torso, femur length, level of flexibility, skill level and intended model usage are very different. This means that there will invariably be different frame size requirements, even for people of the same height and inseam.
SIZING ADVICE BASED ON MASON MODELS
ROAD, ALL-ROAD & GRAVEL - Aspect | Resolution | Definition | SLR | BokehTi | Bokeh | Exposure: Size range is 48cm to 62cm depending on specific model. The chart dimensions show the extremes of useable frame size based on height and the rider size range is very similar for all our frames with 6 or 8 standard sizes.
ULTIMATE ADVENTURE - InSearchOf: Size range is 42cm to 58cm [5 sizes]. As a start point, we would recommend selecting one size down from your normal 'road' frame size. For example, if you would normally ride a 54cm then a 50cm InSearchOf is probably best for you.
ADVENTURE HARDTAIL - RAW | Macro: Size range is Sml to XL [4 sizes]. With the advent of modern, more progressive mountain bike geometry, the sizing process is even more fluid. The Mason RAW and Macro are no different: seat tube lengths are kept deliberately low so riders have a certain amount of flexibility in choosing size based on their preferred reach, wheelbase, handling characteristics and intended use. For instance, for high speed and loaded up stability you may prefer a larger frame that will also provide more pack space in the front triangle. Or, if you are spending most of your time on twisty woodland singletrack, you’d benefit from the shorter wheelbase and extra response of the smaller frame.
We are experienced in sizing and geometry, so of course we will be on the end of the phone or email to help and advise, but we would always recommend having a proper bike fit done before committing, especially if you feel like you may be between sizes. If you do fall between our frame sizes, it’s probably best to go with the smaller size. It’s easier to make a smaller frame fit a little larger than vice versa.
CONFIGURATION: With all models, you can use our drop down menus to configure your finishing kit to suit your needs, including which brake lever operates front/rear wheel and for MTB we’re happy to cut down the handlebar to your desired width.
Please email us here or call 01273 463000 if you have further requirements that you would like to discuss, we are always happy to help.
CUSTOM TUBESET RAW
For the RAW every tube has a custom profile, section or bend to work exactly how we want it for ride quality, clearance and durability.
DFORM DOWN TUBE: RAW
We worked with Dedacciai to design and tool for the exclusive Mason ‘DForm’ down tube for the RAW frame. The special 'D-Section' shape where it meets the BB gives a flat wide weld for maximum stability at the pedalling platform and avoids excessive tube overlap onto the seat tube which can lead to fatigue failure.
UP TO 4X BOTTLE / ACCESSORY MOUNTS
The RAW is designed to travel, so all Raw framesets have a full compliment of bottle and accessory mounts. We do not reduce the number of mounting points with smaller frames.
The frame has 4 x bottle/accessory mounts. All sizes have an extra boss on the down tube which allows greater adjustability to make space for an extra bottle on the seat tube or a larger frame-bag under the top tube.
Top tube pack mounting points are standard with the option to order without if not required.
HIDDEN RACK MOUNTS
Our custom designed CNC’d steel dropouts contain discrete mounting points for rear racks. Eyebolts can be fitted for rack mounting or removed and replaced with a stainless grub screw for a clean aesthetic.
Note: Insert Eyebolt fully into dropout threaded hole by hand and use locknut to secure the bolt in the correct position for rack fitting, by tightening it against the dropout face.
Recommended locknut torque: 5Nm
Max Rack Loading: 20kg
44MM HEADSET
A straight 44mm internal diameter head tube uses the EC44/ZS44 press fit headset standard which allows compatibility with all current fork steerer tube standards as well as angle adjust headsets.
44mm RING-REINFORCED HEAD TUBES
This frameset features a UK made Reynolds 631 head tube, CNC-machined by BEAR Frame Supplies.
The large overall diameter provides a useful weld area, with ‘Ring-Reinforcement’ top and bottom for strength and tapering down in the middle to reduce weight.
CUSTOM MASON X DEDACCIAI TUBING: ZERO/ZERO UNO
Almost the entire tubeset was developed in conjunction with Italian tube gurus Dedacciai, using their new 'ZERO/ZERO UNO', fine grain, micro-alloyed, progressive butted steel tubing. We work very closely with them to develop our model-specific Alu, Ti and steel tubesets for Bokeh, BokehTi, Definition, ISO, RAW, Exposure and SLR.
Internal Routing
We route the hoses and cables internally where practical, keeping the 'adventure nature' of our bicycles firmly in mind. For smoother runs and a cleaner aesthetic, all control cables, hoses and electronic shift control wires now run through the down tube, via the special BB shell and out through the chainstays, guided by our Mason 'MultiPort' adaptable inserts. Interchangeable Internal routing keeps the control cabling away from road dirt and grime, helps avoid accidental damage, makes cleaning easy, de-clutters your bike and means you can adapt your bike easily to work with various shifting and braking methods. For adventure and endurance riding, internal routing also has the advantage that it is easy to strap frame packs to the frame tubes without being hindered by external cabling and hoses.
DROPPER-READY
A dropper is great for getting the saddle out of the way for steeper, rougher and more technical riding, especially with a loaded up bike.
The 31.6 post size allows the use of most modern dropper-posts. The seat tube has internal ‘stealth’ routing which can be blanked-off when not in use.
Important: Scroll to see 'essential dimensions' with maximum dropper length details.
REYNOLDS RAW SEAT TUBE
A high quality Reynolds seat tube, custom shaped to provide the right balance of tyre clearance and chainstay length. Ø31.6 internally to be compatible with all popular dropper posts and our own Penta carbon seatposts. Exclusive Mason Macro Ø34.9mm seatclamp tops it off. Seat tube also has internal routing for stealth dropper post.
120MM SUSPENSION FORK
The RAW is designed around a 120mm suspension fork with a static axle to crown height of 531mm and an offset of 44mm. This is the ideal amount of fork travel to keep geometry changes in check throughout the stroke and allow traversal of the chunkiest terrain when combined with large volume 29” wheels and tyres.
INBOARD DISC-MOUNT
The caliper is mounted to our custom, CNC’d post mount bridge that sits between the chain and seat stays. This allows us to use lighter seat-stays and maximizes the tubular chainstay for maximum compliance. Native brake rotor size is 160mm, or 180mm with an adapter.
OPTIONAL MALE THREADED BOTTLE BOSSES ON SEAT TUBE
For use with longer travel dropper posts on the smaller sizes, male threaded bosses can be specified allowing uninterrupted seat tube for as much seatpost insertion as possible. Fitted with 8mm, Black Stainless, locking Flange nuts.
31.6 SEAT POST
The Reynolds seat tube is Ø31.6 internally to be compatible with all popular dropper posts and our own Penta carbon seatposts.
BOOST SPACING
148 x 12 at the rear for compatibility with modern MTB wheels. Boost spacing allows us to optimise frame clearance and stability and run large rim widths and big volume tyres.
1X DRIVETRAIN SPECIFIC
Designed specifically around the latest 12 speed mountain bike drivetrains allowing for greater tyre clearance, chain security and performance in muddy conditions. Ultra wide gearing options provide ample range for any terrain.
29ER
Large diameter wheels and tyres are extremely fast-rolling, with a big contact-patch and low rolling resistance. Bikes with 29" wheels are ideal for long-distance adventure, giving speed, comfort and forgiving handling, over an extremely wide range of terrain.
The MASON RAW is designed for 29” MTB wheels and tyres up to 2.6”. Recommended tyre sizes: 29 x 2.3” - 29 x 2.6”.
The MASON Macro is designed for 29” MTB wheels and tyres up to 2.4”. Recommended tyre sizes: 29 x 2.0” - 29 x 2.4”.
3D PRINTED CHAINSTAY PROTECTOR
Custom designed and 3D printed in Europe from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). This flexible, rubber like material utilises the latest 3D printing technology to minimise chain slap noise and prevent the paint on the chainstay from getting chipped.
THREADED BB: RAW
The RAW frames use high quality stainless steel 73mm, BSA, threaded bottom bracket shells. This gives greater durability and creak-free reliability over many miles. The threaded BB is easier to service using standard tools and you are more likely to find a replacement when adventuring far from home. A properly lubricated, threaded BB is also an ideal interface with a metal BB shell.
ESSENTIAL DIMENSIONS: RAW
BRAKING
Rotor Size: The rear rotor diameter will be 160mm with the calliper mounted directly to the brake mount. An adapter can be used for a 180mm rear rotor maximum.
Caliper Type: This frame is designed for Post-Mount calipers.
We always recommend using genuine brake mounting hardware and consulting us directly using the 'Technical' dropdown, or using a qualified cycle mechanic if in doubt.
WHEELS + AXLE SPACING
The RAW is designed around the 'BOOST' 148mm hub standard, allowing wider wheels and high volume tyres with larger clearances front and rear. The wider hub flanges result in a stiffer wheel, giving enhanced bike handling and shorter/wider stays allow progressive geometry, whilst a wider rear hub helps give a greater choice of chainrings.
Axle length/pitch: 172x12mm x 1.5tpi axle with 2mm spacer.
TYRE SIZES
All frame sizes are designed for and tested with up to 29x2.6” tyres.
The below are guides only. Fitted width may vary depending on tyre manufacturer and rim width. Please check true fitted dimensions of chosen components to be sure.
Max tyre size: 29" x 2.6"
Min tyre size: 29" x 2.3”
